Welcome to the strange and horrifying mind of Emmet Shrineburrough.
Henry Apeman looked on as the machine came to life again. Something unusual had happened overnight. In the middle of the night, a dream had startled Henry awake. On a whim, he rose from bed, dressed hastily, and drove seven miles to the Eniac lab to view the machine. Just as in his dream, the machine had changed during the night. It was now a symbiote, half metal and wire and half biological organism. Was it living or was it dead? A cold feeling came over Henry. He stood in silence as the cold room echoed around him. The machine's sickening tendrils undulated in the sickly yellow light of the lab. The machine emitted a soft hum or hiss, almost imperceptible. It sounded oddly like a baby's gentle breath in the early hours of morning in the anticipation of dawn. Was she here, watching him again? Henry began to sweat, looking straight ahead into the abyss, as the familiar presence of the invisible beings began to overtake his conscious mind once again.
